Our Story

How it all started...

Back Creek Friends Church was founded in 1785, with the first meeting house being built to provide a place for worship and fellowship in 1789. In those early days, the small but dedicated congregation gathered in simplicity, following the Quaker tradition of seeking God's guidance through quiet reflection, worship, and community action.

Back Creek Friends Church played a crucial role in the abolition of slavery, deeply aligning with the Quaker belief in equality and the inherent worth of every individual. During the turbulent years leading up to the Civil War, the church actively supported the abolitionist movement and even participated in the Underground Railroad, providing safe passage and shelter to those escaping slavery. This legacy of courage and conviction continues to inspire  to this day!

Expanding the vision...

Back Creek Friends Church has a rich history of church planting, helping to establish new Quaker meetings across the region. Our commitment to spreading the faith led to the founding/support of several other Friends meetings, including Uwharrie Friends, Science Hill Friends, Hopewell Friends, and Asheboro Friends.

At the heart of Back Creek Friends Church is a  passion for the Gospel, which has driven our efforts in church planting and community service for generations. Our mission is clear: to share the love and message of Jesus Christ with others, helping people come to faith and grow in their relationship with Him. Whether through establishing new congregations or serving the  community, everything we do is rooted in the desire to see lives transformed by the power of the Gospel.
